Wohnloft

Conversion of a former engine workshop

The design for converting a former engine workshop into a residential loft within a square courtyard ensemble evolved successively during the construction process. As gradual demolition work progressed, the original geometries of the main building were revealed. Generous openings to the garden transformed the dark workshop spaces into light-filled living areas with expansive views. The aim was to engage in a dialogue with the existing building fabric—keeping the original condition visible while emphasizing the functional elements of the engine workshop and addressing new requirements.

The interplay between renewal and preservation is exemplified in the large courtyard, which has been continuously expanded since the 17th century. Although the paving stones were replaced, the courtyard retains its original walls and the gate leading to the garden. The staircase, including its handrail, was also preserved in its original state. Even an electricity turbine discovered during renovation was integrated into the living spaces. Together, these elements highlight the industrial character of the former factory, while the newly designed interiors provide warmth and comfort.

On the upper floor, the structural columns disappear into a large built-in volume that not only offers storage and seating niches but also serves as access to the bedrooms and children’s rooms. From the spacious play and living room above, a slide installed in the area of the old freight elevator connects directly to the ground-floor living space with loft kitchen.
