NOWHERE / NOW HERE

EIN PERFORMANCEFESTIVAL

The live performances of eight contemporary choreographers meet performative video works by twelve artists from the 1960s and 1970s.

Parallel to the emergence of performance art, which broke with the Western concept of the static art object from the early 1960s onwards, video technology established a new type of recording. nowhere / now here is dedicated to the contradiction that arises between live art as something ephemeral, fleeting, unique and its technical (re-)production: For contrary to their original form, live actions become a pictorial art form again in the historicization of the corresponding documentary material - and as such find their way into museum collections such as that of the mumok.

The title, “nowhere / here now”, refers to the dual structure of the festival, which combines live program and historical film material. What is created in one moment disappears in the next, only to reappear in a medially altered form.

At the center of the historical examination are film documentations of performances from the 1960s and 1970s that are part of the mumok collection - works that turned against various social taboos and body images as well as repressive conventions and thus exerted a strong influence on contemporary artistic positions.
