Stille Räume

Design of the annual exhibition 2019/2020 of the Friedl Kubelka School of Artistic Photography at das weisse haus

Curated by Itai Margula, the graduates of the 2019/2020 class of the Friedl Kubelka School of Artistic Photography presented their final projects.

The cross-media show thereby demonstrated the broad and open understanding of artistic photography that is imparted to the students of the Friedl Kubelka School under the direction of Anja Manfredi year after year. Despite being divided into five different thematic areas, it showed itself as a collective resonance space reflecting the philosophy of the school, which has been in existence since 1990. "Silent Spaces" was curated and scenographed by Itai Margula.

From the curatorial note: Photography fades in on motifs just as it fades out others. Often, what is really important remains blurred. Not what is to be seen, but what is absent shows that the image is more than the sum of its parts. In this way, new references and neighborhoods emerge, situational relationships are altered, and the supposedly irrevocable is called into question.

The multiform silent spaces of the exhibition presented themselves as atmospheric backgrounds in which the resulting conversations between space and light were embedded. The result seems loud, sublime, elegant, coherent and yet lost - dark, familiar, lonely, comforting and yet terrifying.
