Competition entry of the new sanitary rooms in the Mak
At the museum’s invitation to redesign the sanitary facilities of the MAK, the existing structure was first analyzed and evaluated against current standards. This process led to new floor plan proposals that incorporated both the required hygiene and ventilation concepts. For the aesthetic redesign, a room tile developed by architect Heidulf Gerngross—yet to go into production—was selected. The tile is based on his spatial and formal principle of the Archiquant.
The Archiquant, a recurring motif throughout Gerngross’s work, is a form he developed whose radius corresponds exactly to its width. It is a body-oriented geometry: on the one hand derived from the surface spanned by two outstretched elbows, and on the other from applying the golden ratio to the length of the forearm.
The modular arrangement of these tiles creates customized organic spatial experiences for each room.
As a second design proposal, the existing floor plans were retained, while a graphic spatial concept was developed in collaboration with the artist collective Soybot.
